The following morning, I set off from the inn to meet with the team of police officers Drew had selected to search the tunnels. I followed the path of the river eastward while Mart drifted behind me, humming under his breath. I did my best to ignore the twinge of guilt in my chest at how Iâd intentionally left the inn before Carey had come downstairs and before Jia had shown up for work to avoid unnecessary questions.
I also hadnât mentioned the vampire to the other officers. That might come back to bite meâpun intendedâbut I wasnât sure my brother was right about the vampire making his home down in the tunnels.
When we reached the outskirts of Hawkwood Hollow, Mart and I crossed another bridge to the area I recognised as where Iâd emerged from my near drowning. The tunnel entrance was farther from the town itself than Iâd realised, nestled beneath the bridge and surrounded by gathering police officers.
Drew waylaid me first. âMaura, are you sure about this?â
âAbsolutely.â Dropping my voice, I added, âIf thereâs anything inside the tunnels thatâs visible only to a Reaper, your team should be glad to have my brother and me in there.â
âYour brother is coming too?â
âYes, he is.â Leaving him behind was out of the question. âIs the entrance clear? No booby traps?â
âIâll send a couple of people ahead. Both volunteers are wizards, so theyâll be able to remove any hostile security spells.â
âI hope youâre right.â I watched Mart float over to the tunnel entrance ahead of the two wary-looking officers Drew had selected. I didnât know either of them well, but since they were wizards, they did at least have some ability to handle Minaâs sneaky security spells.
A vampire, though? I had my doubts.
I trod closer to the tunnel entrance as the two wizards disappeared inside. âDrew, I think I should lead the way.â
âMaura.â He lowered his voice. âI have to let my team maintain some level of control here.â
âIf thereâs a trap in there, itâs meant for me.â I was also prepared this time. âCan I justââ
âWatch out!â The cry came from within the tunnel entrance, and one of the wizards came bolting out of there as if a manticore were on his tail. Behind him, his fellow officer screamed from somewhere in the dark.
Drew swore and moved closer, but in order to properly see into the tunnel, heâd have to go inside.
âIâm going in,â I told him, pulling out my wand and casting a light spell. âReady?â
Drew inclined his head and descended the bank while I used my wand to illuminate the tunnel entrance. Inside, the second officer lay groaning on the floor, but there was no sign of his attacker.
âWho was it?â Drew asked.
The officer winced, pressed his hands to his neck, and his fingers came away red. âA⦠I think it was a vampire.â
âCrap.â My body tensed. âHe is hiding in here.â
âI knew it!â Mart yelled in triumph. âTake that, doubters.â
âMart,â I said out of the corner of my mouth, âplease do everyone a favour and chase down the vampire instead of gloating.
